Lay Day for Fiji Pro, Slater Leads World's Best to Cloudbreak
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 June, 2014 - Tavarua, Fiji - The waiting period for the Fiji Pro, stop No. 5 of 11 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), officially begins today. A lay day has been called and event organizers will reconvene tomorrow, Monday, June 2, 2014 to assess conditions.
The world’s best surfers have arrived in Fiji with 11-time ASP World Champion and defending event winner, Kelly Slater donning the yellow jersey as current ASP World No. 1.
"I feel at home in Fiji and when things come together I feel like I could be competitive there forever," said Kelly Slater." The waves do most of the work for you, you just need to fit into it properly and pick the right ones. Experience has won me events there for sure a few times."
The island paradise of Tavarua offers some of the Tour's most challenging and extreme conditions on this year’s schedule. The deep-water beast of Cloudbreak and perfect high-performance lefthander of Restaurants will serve as locations for this year’s Fiji Pro.
The ASP wildcard has been awarded to Glenn Hall (IRL) who will join the ASP Top 34 along with local trials winner Isei Tokovou (FJI). Adam Melling (AUS) and Raoni Monteiro (BRA) have withdrawn from the competition due to injury. ASP replacement surfer Mitch Coleborn (AUS) and Quiksilver Saquarema Prime winner Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) will compete in their place.
Hall, Tokovou, Coleborn and Dantas complete the lineup of the world’s best surfers as they return to the world-class Fijian reef breaks of Cloudbreak and Restaurants from June 1 – 13, 2014 for the fifth stop on this season’s dream tour.
The 2014 WCT has completed the opening four of 11 events this season with 11-time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater (USA), leading the pack following the Gold Coast, Margaret River, Bells Beach and Rio de Janeiro.
