Globetrotting photographer Peter 'Joli' Wilson blogs about having the Eye Of The Tyler
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 October, 2016 - Hi everyone, I've just put this Gallery of Tyler Wright together after the Aussies gained another world surfing champ today. Tyler sewed up the women’s 2016 World Surfing Champion by making the final of the Roxy Pro at Hossegor in France.
She claimed her maiden world title when her only rival in this year’s title race, Courtney Conlogue, was beaten in the semi-finals of the event by eventual winner Carissa Moore.
Tyler, who took out Tatiana Weston-Webb in the first semi-final, lost to three-time world champ Carissa Moore in the final but just by finishing one place above Courtney was enough to secure the World Title.
"There's a lot that's gone into this, a lot of hours. A lot of fun," said Wright, who won four events this year and finished runner up in two more.
For her final battle against Moore, Wright wore her brother Owen's jersey number as a tribute to the sibling who has helped her immeasurably on her road to the title. Taking off switch, Tyler imitated her older brother's stance on her first wave as a dedication to the goofy-foot, who suffered a serious head injury last winter in Hawaii.
It was a poignant public tribute after what has been a trying personal time for the family. Tyler's gesture was a small reminder that, even in throes of title races and career-defining moments, certain things in life transcend sporting encounters.
Tyler now joins Layne Beachley with seven World Titles, Steph Gilmore with six, Wendy Botha with four, Chelsea Georgeson, Pauline Menczer and Phyllis O'Donnell with one each in the ranks of Australian women who have conquered the surfing world.
The newly crowned champion had finished runner-up in the standings to Gilmore in 2014 and Moore in 2013.
