Seventh Wahu Surfer Groms event kicks off on Gold Coast

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 January, 2014 -- Some of the country’s youngest and finest surfers will make a splash on the Gold Coast tomorrow at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp.

The seventh instalment of the 10-event series will begin on the Gold Coast beaches tomorrow and record 100-plus grommets are expected to compete across age divisions ranging from Under 8s right through to the blue-ribbon Under 14s.

A fresh southerly change has swept through the Gold Coast today after storms late yesterday and surf conditions have significantly improved in the lead up to competition.

“We will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day,” said Surfing Queensland Event Manager, Adam Yates.

He continued: “With this change in conditions we will be likely to make a call early in the morning as to where competition will begin.”

The next crop of Australian surfing superstars hit the Sunshine Coast in December last year, before heading to Cronulla just prior to Christmas. The series acts as a pathway for Australian youngsters to begin cutting their competitive teeth in surfing, in the hope of one day becoming the next Mick Fanning or Stephanie Gilmore.

The series caters for both boys and girls with divisions for Under 8’s through to Under 14’s, and also offers a variety of beach games for both competitors and spectators alike.

As an added bonus to the series, the winners of the Under 14 divisions at each event will be invited to respective boys' and girls' (20 participants total) three day " Wahu Surf Camps" (all-expenses paid) at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

Spectators are encouraged to come down and find a spot on the sand to witness the depth of the Gold Coast's talent pool and meet some of Queensland's next crop of surfing superstars.

Competitors and spectators are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline on Ph# (07) 3030 6388 after 6:30am each morning of competition for event location and start time.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps is proudly supported by Wahu, Surfing Australia and Surfing Queensland.
