Coasts vie for World Surfaris Coast of Origin title

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 July, 2014 - Sunshine Coast, Queensland - Origin pride of another kind will be on the line this weekend as the World Surfaris Coast of Origin Interclub Surfing Series presented by Samoa Tourism Authority gets underway.

This dynamic surfing series consists of regional coast championships taking place on both the Gold and Sunshine coasts which ultimately decide respective teams to compete for surfing superiority in the State Challenge event scheduled to run on July 26th & 27th.  The series is designed to test the depth of surfing talent on each coast across several surfing disciplines including shortboarding, longboarding and stand up paddle (SUP).

Surfing Queensland CEO Scott Gillies stated, “The Coast of Origin series is now in its fourth year of competition and since its inception has gone from strength to strength. This year, a whopping $20,000 prize purse is on offer so the incentive to win has gone up a notch or two. This series is unique in its nature by allowing Boardriders Clubs from across the region to align with their coastal counterparts in a joint effort to claim bragging rights as the dominant surfing coast.”

After two years of agonising defeat, the Gold Coast was able to claim victory over the Sunshine Coast in 2013, which was largely made possible thanks to the strength of the Snapper Rocks Boardriders Club who claimed victory in both the regional championships and State finals.

Snapper Rocks Boardriders president Jay Phillips noted that overall victory was an icing on the cake within the overall series. “To hold the title of strongest club in Queensland is fantastic for Snapper Rocks - being able to contribute to an overall win for the Gold Coast meant a lot to the club”, stated Phillips.

Throughout the following weeks, affiliated Surfing Queensland Boardriders club members will also be able to enter the draw to win a surfing trip of a lifetime to Samoa thanks to our friends at World Surfaris, Samoa Tourism Authority and Salani Surf Resort.
