Good waves for great field of surfers at Corona Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 October, 2011 : - - Saturday at Middles beach a historic field of surfing talent completed two rounds of competition in  both the Mens and Womens divisions. On a rising swell, the field was narrowed to 32 men and eight women who will battle on Sunday for the titles.

The day began with 2-3 ft sets but increased all day until sets were arriving in the evening in the 5-6 ft range. APSPR President Werner Vega predicts the swell to continue to rise tomorrow. Surf fans will see the most gifted group of visiting pros in the ten year history of the Corona Extra circuit, including Mainland pros Gabe Kling, Ben Bourgeois, and Asher Nolan. Also providing an outstanding performance was Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso.

Tomorrow these lucky visitors will have their hands full with the cream of the local Puerto Rican surfers, led by APSPR ratings leader Brian Toth. Another local favorite Dylan Graves also advanced from his heat today by grabbing the second highest score of the day, an 8.50. But the top score of the day went to Asher Nolan, of Jacksonville, Florida who shattered a head high righthander on his backhand for an 8.60. The men are competing for a record $25,000 in prize money, with first place taking home a check for $10,000.

In the Women’s division, local surfer Liza Caban had the highest total score in her quest to secure the $5000 first prize from the total purse of $12,000. Currently leading the APSPR season rankings for 2011 is Lisalie Gonzales, who kept alive her chances for the title by advancing to tomorrow’s quarter-finals. Gonzales will go against Caban and another Puerto Rican, Idalis Alvarado, as well as Alexis Engstrom, from Hawaii. All of the advancing women in the other quarter-final are from the Mainland: Anastasia Ashley, Amy Nicholl, Karina Petroni and Jasset Unbel. The best wave score of the day went to Umbel, with a 6.93.

All of these scores will come into play as the Women’s and Mens competitors are vying for the special “Best Performance” Awards of $1000 each, presented by Coppertone Suncare. The largest field of competitors in the history of the APSPR circuit has been drawn by the vastly increased prize purse of $37,000. “The extra money to enhance the event this year has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Puert Rico Tourism Company”, added APSPR Executive Director, Vivianee Vega.

Action will begin at Middles Beach at 7:30 AM with the Finals scheduled to conclude at 5:00 PM.

Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Middles will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event. On our website you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view and much more. Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring
