Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 October, 2013 : - - Thirroul, Wollongong NSW - Conditions mellowed today for the second and final day of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp, Wollongong as competition resumed in one-to-two foot rip bowl waves at Thirroul Beach. As expected, the level of surfing continued to rise over the course of the day with some of Australia’s most promising young surfers lifting the benchmark in competitive tactics and innovative maneuvers.

Mateus Bersot took a convincing win in the Under-8 Mixed final. The Maroubra surfer managed to lock in a 5.50 (out of a possible 10) and a 6.23 to take the win ahead of Kiama’s Dayan Conti who finished in the runner-up position.

Cedar Leigh-Jones continued to show the same form she showed in a handful of Wahu Surfer Groms Comp events last season, successfully taking wins in the Under-10 Girls and Under-12 Girls finals. The Avalon natural-footer threw down a series of technical carves and snaps to notch up a heat total of 11.5 (out of a possible 20) in the Under-10 final and 10.56 in the Under-12 final.

The Under-10 Boys engaged in a full frenzied attack on the lineup in their first final with 55 waves being ridden over the course of the 20-minute heat. In the end it was Kobi Clements who got the better of the two final exchanges, taking one convincing win as well as a runner-up finish. As a result, Clements was crowned the Under-10 Boys champion with Nate Hopkins taking second place.

Lennox Chell’s deadly backhand repertoire proved to be an advantage in the Under-12 Boys final. The powerful Avoca goofy-footer threw down a chain of critical turns to take the win ahead of fellow Avoca Boardriders Club surfers Zayne Olsson and Finn Hill who took second and third respectively, while Cabarita’s Dane Pullinger finished in fourth.

“It’s such a cool feeling to win this and share the final with a bunch of guys I surf with all the time,” said Chell. “I think I had a bit of an advantage surfing on my backhand as I was able to go more vertical through my turns. I got a new board a week before this event and it went amazing out there. I’m so stoked.”

Macy Callaghan added another feather to Avoca’s cap claiming the overall victory in the Under-14 Girls. The fluent natural-footer locked in an impressive 9.17 in her first final, which paved the way for her to take dual wins in her two respective heats.

Queensland’s Zahli Kelly put up a valiant fight, but ultimately had to settle for the runner-up spot. As a result Macy was awarded with an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

Caleb Tancred made it a hat trick for Avoca when he took the win in the Under-14 Boys final. The ultra fast natural-footer locked in a heat total of 12.17 to claim victory ahead of Ryan Donohoe, Jay Brown and local favourite Keanu Miller who took second, third and fourth respectively. Caleb is currently unbeaten in the 2013/2014 Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series having claimed the Coffs Harbour event back in September.

On land competitors and spectators had the opportunity to win Wahu prizes in beach games like: Crumbed Cutlet challenges, Looney Legs and Cricket Catches.
The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is the only national competition series to fully cater for micro groms from Under-8 through to Under-14 and has been confirmed for 10 events across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.

The Under-8s are a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.
