Rip Curl GromSearch

Surfing New South Wales
Wanda Beach, Cronulla
2 - 5 October, 2014

First day of the Rip Curl GromSearch starts with a bang

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 October, 2014 - Day one of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca kicked off today in punchy two-to-three foot righthanders at Wanda Beach. Max Mcguigan (Chifley, NSW) got a late call-up into the Under-14 Boys division and as a result, wasted little time destroying the righthand walls with a series of backside snaps and hooks. The eastern suburbs surfer was promptly rewarded with a 16.5 heat total (out of a possible 20 points).

Mcguigan will now face off against Billy Harrison (Barwon Heads, Vic), Ethan Raper (Narrabeen, NSW) and Flynn Grogan (Narrabeen, NSW) in the second round. Other Under-14 Boys heat winners included: Harry Carpenter (Wamberal, NSW), Darcy Piltz (Budgewoi, NSW) and Patrick Hardman (Narrabeen, NSW).

Ren Hashimoto (Japan) flew the flag for the international contingent in the Under-16 Girls, posting an impressive 15.84 heat total for an eclectic mix of forehand manoeuvres. Consequently, Hashimoto – who currently resides on the Gold Coast – left the rest of the field chasing solid two wave combinations to take her lead.

Macy Callaghan (Avoca, NSW) posted the highest two-wave total of the event, scoring a 9.83 (out of a possible ten points) and a 9.17 in the Under-16 Girls. The Central Coast natural-footer surfed well beyond her years, throwing down a solid display of power surfing that got the spectators cheering.

Local surfers Jay Brown (Lilli Pilli, NSW) and Paris Whittaker (Caringbah, NSW) both linked together a chain of technically sound moves to take respective wins in the Under-16s division and book their spot into the next round.

Tomorrow’s event is expected to kick off at 7.30am. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
