Day one of HIF Agnes Water Surfing Festival sees playful 2-3 foot surf for groms

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 April, 2015 - Agnes Water, Queensland - Grommets invade Agnes Point for day one of the HIF Agnes Water Surfing Festival presented by Brandmans Windows & Doors.

As event officials anticipated, the iconic Agnes Point welcomed competitors with a clean 2-3ft easterly swell providing favourable conditions for juniors on day one of the HIF Agnes Water Surfing Festival presented by Bradnams Windows & Doors.

Among the competitive thickness within the junior divisions, brothers Jett and Kodi Dellit (Cooum Beach, QLD) proved to be evident standouts and in strong contention within their divisions in this year’s festival.

In his Under 10 Boys (Parent Assist) division, Kodi concluded his round one heat finishing in first place, effectively moving straight through to semi final number one which later took place in the afternoon. Kodi continued with his forward momentum and progressive surfing in his semi to again take out first place with a heat total of 13.80 (out of a possible 20) with a 7.33 (Out of a possible 10) for his highest single wave score, guaranteeing himself a spot in Sunday’s final.

Brother Jett Dellit (Coolum Beach,QLD) didn’t let his younger brother steal all the limelight with Jett posting not only the highest single wave score of the day in his semi final heat (8.83 – Out of a possible 10) but also landing a 16.90 (Out of a possible 20) making it the highest heat total for the event so far. Along with his younger brother, Jett will move forward to Sunday’s Under 12 Boys final.

As the day Agnes Point continued to deliver quality waves towards the tail end of competition on day one, the Stand Up Paddle Boarders made good use of the increase in swell which is forecasted to peak late Saturday afternoon. Laurie Stephenson (Bundaberg, QLD) pieced together an array of progressive turns which saw him land a heat total of 12.30, (Out of a possible 20) enough to secure first place and defeat fellow competitors Andrew Smith (Tannum Sands, QLD) and Paul Stumer (Innes Park, QLD) respectively. Laurie moves straight through to an elimination Sunday’s final in hope of taking out this year’s title.

Although defeated in his opening round one heat in the Stand Up Paddle Board division, Paul Stumer (Innes Park, QLD) made his way back finishing second in his requalification round which put him back against fellow counterpart Laurie Stephenson for another chance at taking the title.

Club President for Pacifique Surfriders Paul Stumer said, “This is my third consecutive year for the HIF Agnes Water Surfing Festival. Along with myself, our club uses this event as somewhat of a club camp to boost competitor involvement within our club and also to give our young juniors an idea of the professional benchmark judging panel,” said Stumer.

“Along with the locals and seasoned competitors, our club appreciates Surfing Queensland catering for those younger divisions like the Under 10’s parent assist and also facilitating the requalification format for all divisions,” Stumer continued.
