Rip Curl GromSearch Australian Series
Coolum, Queensland, Australia
17 - 20 December, 2013
Final GromSearch kicks off on Sunshine Coast
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 December, 2013 -- The final event of the five stop Rip Curl GromSearch Australian series, presented by POSCA, begins tomorrow and will see the country’s premier junior surfers converge on the beautiful shores of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, for their last chance to better their position on the GromSearch ratings and try and secure a spot in the Rip Curl GromSearch National final.
Four days of competition will allow over 150 entries to have a shot at the title in the respective age divisions of 16 and under (16s), 14 and under (14s) and 12 and under (12s). On beach activities, giveaways and the daily POSCA Expression Session encourage participants to have a good time with their friends in the lead-up to Christmas holidays whilst they compete.
The best talent in the country will be amongst the entrants looking to improve their positions on their respective GromSearch ratings, with the premier 16s division having the extra incentive of trying to secure the final invitations for the annual Rip Curl GromSearch National Championship that will be awarded for the winner of their division in Coolum.
Kalani Bell (Stanwell Park, NSW), Monty Tait (Maroubra, NSW), Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, Vic) and Shaun Manners (Margaret River, WA) have all secured spots in the National Final after previous wins on the series.
They will be joined by the eventual winner of the Queensland event, as well as the highest placed surfer on the GromSearch Ratings, that hasn’t already won an event (currently Jackson Baker from Newcastle, NSW), to ensure that the final field will feature the best talent in the country.
Local knowledge could prove vital in determining that outcome with around half of the field being Queenslanders. Illustrating this point is the fierce battle in the under 16s girls competition between Holly Wawn (Avalon, NSW) and Sunshine Coasters Isabella Nichols and Laura Poncini. Wawn has won both GromSearch events that she’s entered this year in Cronulla and Trigg beach and all three girls were in the National final last year, with Nichols taking the win then.
Poncini took out the last GromSearch event in Seaford Beach South Australia and will also hit the water full of confidence.
The National final of the Rip Curl GromSearch has proved to be a definitive stepping stone for elite talent with previous winners including current ASP world Tour surfers Tyler Wright (2nd in 2013), Stephanie Gilmore (5x ASP Women’s World Champion), Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright all reaching the elite level of our sport.
This year’s National Champion will be decided late next week in Coolum and will follow in the footsteps of previous greats and gain an invitation to represent Australia at the International Rip Curl GromSearch finals, to be held early next year in an as yet undisclosed location.
The Rip Curl GromSearch, presented by POSCA will be held at the best waves available along the coastlines between Caloundra and Coolum.
