Benson takes off during traffic stop in Hawaii

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 March, 2016 - WSL qualifying series warrior Tonino Benson from Kailua-Kona Hawaii has been charged with first-degree assault on an officer after a traffic stop gone wrong.

Benson was pulled over by a Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit was informed he was wanted for violating probation. Benson then allegedly fled the scene, forcing the officer to jump out of the way and thereby endangering the officer in the process.

The Hawaii Tribune reports that “Benson was in the middle of a four-year probation term after entering a deferred acceptance of a not guilty plea to charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, second-degree forgery and attempted second-degree theft on July 1, 2014.”

The probation violations stem from failure to appear at two probation drug tests. On top being charged with reckless driving in this latest law entanglement, Benson is now charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and failure to obey police.

The defense attorney has requested a mental health examination for Benson.
