Explosive turns and colorful surfing highlight the competiton

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 October, 2014 - Cronulla’s great run of swell continued today for day two of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca, as grommets battled it out in the first batch of elimination rounds.

Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW) made his intentions clear in the Under-16 Boys, smashing out a variety of massive backhand jams. The Northern Beaches goofy-footer surfed an impressive heat and managed to effortlessly negotiate the sometimes-tricky sections to post a 13.67 heat total (out of a possible 20 points).

Ryan Slattery (Toukley, NSW) posted the highest heat total of the Under-16 Boys today, locking in an impressive 15.46 total. Slattery’s performance enabled him to zoom past Sam Taylor (Palm Beach, NSW) who notched up 12.67 and finished in second.

Reef Heazlewood (Moffatt Beach, Qld), Noah Kearney (Caloundra, Qld), Samson Coulter (Balgowlah, NSW), Dextar Muskens (Tweed Heads, NSW), Zane Clifford (Boat Harbour, NSW), Luke Hamilton (Merewether, NSW), Morgan Ciblic (Merewether, NSW), Noah Munro (Noraville, NSW), Harmon Kassulke (Manly, NSW) and Luke Wrice (Coledale, NSW) all locked in wins in Under-16 Boys and have booked their spot into the third round.

Laura Poncini (Moffatt Beach, Qld), Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW), Macy Callaghan (Avoca, NSW) and Ren Hashimoto (Japan) all notched up heat totals in excess of 11 points to take wins in Under-16 Girls. As a result, all girls have booked their spot into the semi-finals.

Lucy Callister (Palm Beach, Qld) and Paris Whittaker (Caringbah, NSW) engaged in a fierce battle for second position in their Under-16 Girls heat. With Laura Poncini holding down a solid lead, Callister and Whittaker were left to fight it out for second position. In the dying minutes, Callister unfortunately suffered an interference that narrowed the gap, but still allowed her to take the runner-up spot by a narrow 0.01 margin.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to judge a solid amount of Rip Curl GromSearch events and the level of surfing continues to astound me,” said former World Championship Tour surfer and Surfing NSW Head Judge Drew Courtney. “Some of the competitors are surfing way beyond their years and their scores are really reflecting it.”

The Posca Wave of the Day was awarded to Adam Varvaressos (Narrabeen) who locked in a solid 9.00 wave score in the Under-14 Boys.

Tomorrow’s event is expected to kick off at 7.30am. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
