Sydney’s Northern Beaches, New South Wales
22 - 25 September 2014

Event runs for kids 14 and under over four days

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 September, 2014 - More than 360 young surfers will hit the waves on Sydney’s Northern Beaches when Barton Lynch’s 2014 Hurley BL Blast Off presented by beecraft surf festival kicks off next month. Staged across four days from Monday September 22 till Thursday September 25 the hugely popular event will be staged at Whale Beach, Avalon and Palm Beach – with the daily location determined by surf conditions.

The Hurley BL Blast Off surf festival marks the first day of the spring school holidays.  “For groms wanting to improve their surf skills there couldn’t be a better way to starts the holidays.  I just wish we could accommodate more kids as we have big numbers wanting to take part on wait lists,” said event founder/director, and former World Champion Barton, Lynch.

Now in its ninth year, kids 14 years and under (with some surf experience) will take part in the jam-packed four-day surfing festival full of activities, games, competition and coaching.   Many of Australia’s Surfing greats such as Layne Beachley, Tom Carroll, Rabbit Bartholomew, Damien Hardman, Laura Enever, Harley Ingleby and Terry Richardson – as well as Barton Lynch, all attend the event to support the participating kids.

The event features a unique format that focuses on coaching and performance improvement rather than wave scores. In the spirit of improvement and enjoyment, all kids are offered advice and coaching no matter their age, experience or their placement in a heat in a supportive and fun environment.

With a record number of 360 spots available, the Hurley BL Blast Off is the largest single grommet event in Australia, and also includes a streetboard clinic and tarp surfing (see editors notes), a free welcome BBQ, Idol themed night, regular skateboard trick competitions and The Keenest Groms awards.

The first 14 and under surf event and competition of its kind in Australia, Hurley BL Blast Off is all about providing the best pre-junior surfing experience for groms.

“I love getting out on the beach with the kids.  The event has an amazing sense of excitement and fun that is infectious.  It’s important that young kids can learn and compete with the focus on having a good time,” says Barton Lynch of the event he founded.

“We’ve uncovered some amazing young talent in previous years, kids come from all around Australia, and this year internationally as well,” added Barton.

With the warmer spring weather kicking in, the Hurley BL Blast Off surf festival is a great way to keep kids active in the school holidays, and budding junior surf pros will get the chance to show off their skills and talk to the some of the best surfers in the world. The competition itself is broken up into age and gender categories from 6yo to 14yo (although kids as young as 3 and 4 also participate), with everyone receiving a goodie bag after participating, and awesome prizes for those ranked 1st -6th.

The divisions are 14s, 12s, 10s, 8s, and 6s for both girls and boys with the judging and coaching panels made up of ex pros, coaches and expert surfers to give participating kids the best advice and direction to take their surfing into the future.

In 2013 the event raised more than $6,000 that went to the Surfrider Foundation, Palm Beach SLSC and to the Aboriginal Medical Service. This year funds raised will go to the Cancer Council who will be part of the event, spreading their sun safe message before summer hits. Entry to be part of the Hurley BL Blast Off is available at The cost is $66/child.

Major sponsors for the event are Hurley and beecraft, with supporting sponsors including; GoPro, Health Space, Amazon Power, Surfing World Magazine, Electric California, Coastalwatch, Futures, Stacey Surfboards, The Perfect Wave Surf Experience, Beach Without Sand, Lost Surfboards, Streetboardz and Fuel TV.
