Legendary surf artist Chris Lundy fighting a malignant brain tumor

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 July, 2015 - Costa Mesa, California - In an effort to raise money to alleviate medical expenses, Hurley will host an art show honoring Chris Lundy, the iconic surf artist who has been battling glioblastoma: a malignant brain tumor.

Chris Lundy is known as much for his heavy-wave surfing as he is for his incredible surf-inspired fine art. The North Shore resident boasts a star-studded portfolio with a rich history in the surf industry, with clients ranging from Nike to Vans to the Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing.

“Painting reveals for me a huge opportunity for discovery,” said Chris. “I lightheartedly refer to it as exploring my own handwriting to the tenth power.”

In late 2014, Chris began his battle with glioblastoma. Never losing hope or drifting from his passion, Chris has continued to do what he loves: surf and paint. Nike Creative Director Mark Smith – a close friend of Chris – wanted to celebrate his life’s work and create a show dedicated to the power and grace of the ocean that he captured in his paintings.

“When we started working on this event, [Chris’s] immediate thoughts directed toward the Waves For Water cause, and a legacy scholarship fund at Art Center College of Design [our alma mater],” said Smith. “I am honored to be a part of Chris’s creative circle and I look forward to seeing the power and grace of so much incredible work… work that dates back to when we met at Art Center during our first day of classes in 1984.”

The Hurley Family is honored to host a show for Chris to alleviate the burden of tremendous medical bills. The Chris Lundy Art Show will take place on Hurley HQ’s campus in Costa Mesa, CA, on Saturday July 18 from 4p.m. to 9p.m.

“Chris Lundy first became known to me in the late ‘70s as one of the most fearless and stylish surfers in Hawaii,” said Bob Hurley. “He subsequently became a well respected surfboard designer and shaper throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. To me, his art is consistent with his surfing and his shaping… imaginative, innovative, curious and… always tasteful. I love it! We could not be more grateful for what he has done for the surf community, and we are more than humbled to host his show here on our campus.”

Original paintings will be on display and available for purchase, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting his medical fund. Prints and limited edition tees will be provided by the Hurley Printing Press, with the proceeds split between Chris’s fund and Waves For Water. Sponsors Primo Beer and Taco Dude will provide complimentary refreshments and food for guests. There will also be a raffle at the event, with a custom Chris Lundypainted surfboard and Phantom Wetsuits on offer.

“Chris Lundy’s work reflects humor – deep in the barrel, back in the distance, and up front in the dragons and chaos that exemplify a unique vision and a creative life,” said Smith.
