The Hurley Pro
ASP World Championship Tour Event
Lower Trestles, San Clemente California
9 - 20 September 2014
Man-on-man “virtual heats” will take place online
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2014 - After months of collecting entries and weeks of deliberating, Hurley announced today the Top 16 contenders of its unique online wildcard contest: The Hurley Pro Video Trials. Public voting will commence on August 4 at thehurleypro.com, where an overall winner — decided solely by fans — will surf against the world’s best at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles starting Sept. 9.
Hundreds of the world’s best up-and-coming surfers submitted entries for the first international installment of the video contest, which captured the imaginations of athletes, fans and celebrities worldwide last year thanks in large part to Dane Reynolds and Cam Richards’ heated social media campaigns.
Standout contestants for 2014 span the globe, and include Hawaii’s Dusty Payne, Australia’s Jack Freestone, Yago Dora from Brazil, Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz and San Clemente heroes Pat and Tanner Gudauskas (the full bracket is published below). They will now compete for one coveted wildcard slot in the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, Stop No. 8 on the ASP World Championship Tour.
A panel of judges – featuring Surf Icon Rob Machado, Big Wave Rider and Professional Coach Mike Parsons, top female surfer Lakey Peterson, HB Icon Brett Simpson and VP Surf Marketing Pat O’Connell – narrowed the selection down to the top 16 entries.
“There’s some crazy surfing in these clips — I’m really impressed by the level of entries,” said O’Connell. “We had to make some tough calls for the last few spots, but it’s now up to the fans to do their part. Whoever wins, we’ll have a wildcard who’s sure to put on a great performance at Lowers.”
Man-on-man “virtual heats” will take place online during the week of August 4, allowing fans to vote on the best surfer of each heat. There are four rounds in total, with one round running each day. The winner – who will become the tour’s only ASP WCT wildcard chosen by popular vote – will be announced August 8.
