Close Calls at the Hurley NSW Junior Surfing State Titles Presented by Vestal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 July, 2012 : - - Coffs Harbour turned on the sunshine and NSW best junior surfers turned up the heat, as the under 18 and under 16 boys from all corners of NSW opened up their campaigns in pursuit of a crown. Packed heats and near perfect conditions welcomed the young male competitors to Park beach, Coffs Harbour. Performances in the under 18’s from past state champions and new talent impressed judges and Connor Gale (Avalon Beach) was one to watch.

Surfing against Shane Campbell (Cronulla), Dan Hosking (Lennox Head) and Zac Ifield (The North Entrance), under sunny skies proved a challenge as the competition was tight between the boys. “I went out there thinking it was going to be pretty close between me and shane, I had a bit of a slow start until I got a 4 point ride which got my confidence up and then I got a 6.93 which put me up there”, said Gale.

Still in second place with two scores on the board, Gale was chasing Campbell who nailed a high 7.67 wave and was keen to over take Campbell, who he has previously come up against in junior competition. “It wasn’t until I found this left that I thought Campbell had it and I nearly stacked it but I got a 6.33 and went into first. This is only the second time I’ve been to Coffs and last time the surf was a little messy but this time it’s perfect”, said Gale who is surfing his last year at the Junior Surfing Titles as he moves onto the Pro Junior.

Gale moves onto round 2 with Campbell and will face Mitchell Parkinson (Tweed Heads), who won his heat with a high flying a 9.5 ride wowing spectators and judges, Parkinson nailed the HURLEY wave of the day and won a HURLEY pack.

Close scores seemed the order of the day as a straight knock out was on the table. Brendan Hay (Copacabana) and Chaz Rayner (Berrara) were neck with Jakob Dolan (Emerald Beach) and Danny Schouten (Bonny Hills), but it was Rayner and Hay who move through to round 2.
Also doing well and making the cut for round 2 in the under 18 boys was Liam Mortensen (Avalon), Jack Germain (Lake Cathie) and Kieran Conway (Caves Beach).

The afternoon saw the under 16 boys begin round 1 and tomorrow will see round 2 take place for both the under 18 and under 16’s. Event schedule is subject to change at all times, please call the Event Hotline 0458 247 212 after 7:00am each day of event for confirmed daily running schedule and contest venue.

Competitors and families are welcomed to the Hoey Moey each night where great deals on meals and entertainment are had by all. The event is proudly supported by the Hoey Moey, VB, Coffs Harbour City Council, Coffs Harbour Tourism and Surfing NSW.
