Costa Rican wildcard Carlos Muñoz faces a challenging heat draw
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 August, 2014 - Top WQS surfer in Costa Rica and Latin America, Carlos 'Cali' Muñoz, recently won a wildcard spot in the WCT Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. Muñoz earned a spot in the prestigious event as a wildcard by a public vote a few weeks ago.
There are only two available spots to enter the event as a 'wildcard' according to the official event page. The heat draw for the event was published and the spots for the wildcards have 11 time world champion Kelly Slater in one heat, and Gabriel Medina in the other.
Muñoz will have to surf in one of the two heats that were announced today. In heat five of round one Muñoz would face 11 time world champion Kelly Slater and Australian Matt Wilkinson, who is currently ranked 22nd. In the other heat, heat number six, he faces the current tour leader, Gabriel Medina and another Australian, Adam Melling.
Carlos Muñoz, now in 54th WQS and will compete for the chance to double his name as a professional surfer on the biggest stage in the world.
"I am sincerely very happy to participate for the first time in a WCT. I do not see any one of the two heats as an easy start; to put it simply, they are they are the best in the world today, "Muñoz said.
It is important to note there are no losers in round one of a WCT event. The new competition format sends the winner of round one to round three and the others to round two. In this case, Muñoz will have two attempts to achieve a good result.
