Event one wraps up at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 September, 2013 : - - Sunshine Coast, Queensland - Eight elite Queensland junior surfers etched their names on the event one trophies at the 2013 Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles at Coolum Beach.

In shifting 1-1.5m waves at Coolum Beach, spectators were treated to four spectacular finals. In an event draw loaded with talent Luke Hynd (Burleigh Heads, QLD) and Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, QLD) claimed victory in the blue ribbon Under 18’s divisions. The two young surfers will be hot contenders to secure themselves wildcards into the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Trials in 2014.

In a tight Under 18 Boys final, Hynd (13.84 – out of possible 20) narrowly beat Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD – 11.34), Nick Callister (Burleigh Heads, QLD – 9.00) and Jackson Coffey (Coolangatta, QLD – 6.70). Coolum Local, Isabella Nichols etched a win in the Under 18 Girls division with 13.10 points, besting Holly-Sue Coffey (Coolangatta, QLD – 11.66), Jade Wheatley (Currumbin, QLD – 9.66 and Ellie Brooks (Elanora, QLD – 6.70).

Both Hynd and Nichols take a narrow series lead going into the Queensland State Junior Titles second event on the Gold Coast in October and will be vying for the coveted Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Trials wildcards. Under 16 Boys division champion, Ethan Ewing (Point Lookout, QLD) showed great promise throughout the weekend with an array of critical manoeuvrers under his belt and style beyond his years.

The Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles is the exclusive qualification pathway for the State's elite junior competitors. Queensland is the current Australian Champion State. Winning their way through to a finals position at this first event puts the surfers in great contention to secure a position on the State team and ultimately take the Queensland State Championship Title in their respective divisions.
