Fifth Date of Costa Rica's Surf Competition Kicks off next w/end with Isaac Vega Leading the Ratings

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 February, 2006 : - - Playa Nosara, COSTA RICA  --  Antonio Pilurzu, head of Costa Rica’s Federacion de Surf (FS) , announced today that the fifth tournament of the 2005-06 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) will take place this weekend, March 4 and 5 in Playa Nosara, beginning at 6:00 a.m.

This will be the final of three Copa Mango dates, the contest-within-a-contest sponsored by the Costa Rican chain Mango Skate & Surf Shop, that has been tallying a separate rankings system that will reward winners next week.

Currently, Tamarindo’s Isaac Vega holds the #1 Open spot in both the Copa Mango contests, and the CNS tournament. According to the records of the Costa Rican Federacion de Surf (FS) released prior to Nosara’s event, Vega has earned 2,000 points in Copa Mango contests that took place at Playa Hermosa in January, and Playa Dominical this February. He maintains 4,450 points total for the year with the CNS.

"I have been training hard to maintain my place at the top,” Vega said. “This year I have surfed good, sometimes very well, but I cannot claim victory yet and the championship is one of my great goals.”

Although, he earned the Junior National Championship last year, and has twice traveled with the Costa Rican National Surf Team to international competitions, “in Nosara, I have the opportunity to add valuable points to move away a little more from the other competitors in the Open. I am going to surf with the strategy to gain enough distance to win.”

One of the competitors Vega will be watching for in Nosara is the #3 CNS Open ranked Vilbert Wingrove, who lives in nearby Garza. A member of the local Harbor Reef Lodge Surf Team which travels every date of the Circuito together, Wingrove has been putting in extra training time recently at Guiones and Camronal since a knee injury sidelined him from a couple of CNS contests.

Because of those absences, Vilbert is not ranked on the Copa Mango chart, but is still close enough in points in the Circuito that a big win at home could shuffle the top spots of the National Open rankings. For the Copa Mango Playa Nosara 4-star contest, winners of 1st place in each of the 11 categories will add 1,500 points in both the Copa Mango and CNS rankings records.

Inscriptions will take place Friday, March 3, between 5 and 7 p.m., at Blue Dogs Hotel and Bar. (The price is c6000 for this date only, with c6000 to register for the entire year if you did not pay the annual fee at a previous contest.) The Mango Surf Party will go off at Tropicana Bar Discotheque on Saturday night for competitors and their guests.

The international sponsors for Copa Mango are Red Bull, Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, and Freestyle. Costa Rica’s sponsors are: Mango Surf & Skate, Tamarindo Vista Villas, Cala Luna Hotel & Villas, Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort & Residential Community, The Backyard, Chuck’s W.O.W. Surf Shop, Shifi Surf Shots, Liquid Solutions, Bevy Media Corp, Fischer Bros Surfboard Designs, Banzaii, Carton, Teletica 7, 911 La Radio and Surfos Magazine.
