Freestone now leads the Queensland Championship circuit

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 May, 2014 - Coolangatta’s Jack Freestone has made his intentions known to fellow Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) competitors after taking out the third event of the four-event series, the Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro today.

In a consistent 2-4ft swell at Coolum Beach, in form Freestone tackled a rampaging Tim Macdonald (Miami, QLD) who’d had his sights set on taking his first Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro title. In a closely fought heat, it was Freestone, MacDonald, Sunshine Coast’s Kai Hing and Lincoln Taylor (Point Lookout, QLD) respectively after the final hooter.

Macdonald and Freestone went back and forth between first and second from the get go of the final, however it was Freestone who got the better of the exchange posting a total heat score of 16.90 (out of a perfect 20) while Macdonald finished closely with a heat total of 16.54 (out of a perfect 20).

For the win, freestone takes home a $3,000 dollar winner’s cheque; the ratings lead of the Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) and a step closer to competing against the world’s best surfers in the trials at the first stop of the 2015 ASP World Tour, The Quiksilver Pro.

“Competing in the QCC events is a great stepping stone and a huge confidence builder leading into bigger events,” says Freestone. “Coming off a finals finish at the Alley Classic, I felt really confident leading into this event and I guess that translated right through to my final,” he continued.

The 2014 QCC series boasts a stellar AUD$20,000 prize-pool, with an extra AUD$500 randomly awarded to four competitors who compete in all four events. Based on competitors’ best three-of-three results, the series’ top two athletes will once again get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2015 ASP World Championship Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials, Snapper Rocks.
