Jan Sleigh joins Ecover Blue Mile in Weymouth
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 July, 2013 : - - South West-based international stand-up paddleboard rider Jan Sleigh says he’s relishing the prospect of taking on the public and fellow pros at the Ecover Blue Mile in Weymouth on 27-28 July.
Jan, who lives in Newquay, rides for Naish at events around the world and is taking part in the UK’s first ever Naish One SUP Race Series. The series is part of the Ecover Blue Mile, which brings together experienced pros and people trying SUP and kayaking for the first time.
The event – which is raising money for the Marine Conservation Society – kicks off the 10-day Dorset Festival of Sport, exactly a year on from the start of the Olympic 2012 sailing events in Weymouth.
Jan says there should be great racing for people to see – and compete in: “The Weymouth event is exciting because it’s a one design race format - everyone is using the Naish One 12'6 inflatable, which means there is a level playing field in terms of equipment. The racing will come down to fitness, technique and determination - with maybe water conditions and weather on the day playing a part. And it's great that the racing is part of the Blue Mile.”
Jan, 44, is also an international windsurfer and took up SUP In 2007: “I have competed on and off since then - mainly doing wave riding events, but also the odd race including the first SUP World Cup in Germany, a down winder in Hawaii, and a few UK events, including the gruelling 20 mile race at Brighton’s Paddle Round The Pier Festival and a Blue Mile event in London.
“This year I have done the British Stand Up Paddle Association wave event in Watergate Bay, the Legends of the Bay Kitesurfing and SUP combined event and also the Head of the Dart Race - but that was more for fun than racing as I took my girlfriend with me for the race. I stuck with her for the 15km - it was an awesome, picturesque paddle. We both did it on the Naish One and it was her first time on the board and her first paddle for a year!”
SUP is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and Jan can see why: “For me it's the versatility of the sport. My main sport is windsurfing but SUP gives me another way to get on the water and ride waves. It also brings more than that because you can paddle on lakes, rivers, canals or the sea and cruise to places with friends - or do a workout or race. There are so many aspects and it's so accessible - just jump on and go - all you need is water!”
Jan, who is racing on both days at the Weymouth event, is encouraging members of the public to take part: “Absolutely! It will be fun. I think this is a great event to be involved in to help promote SUP, the Blue Mile and marine conservation - so we can all enjoy the ocean.”
