Jeffrey's Bay ready for an action-packed weekend in July
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 April, 2015 - Jeffreys Bay, South Africa - With just over two months to go, the town of Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape is preparing for another JBay Winterfest. It is going to be an action-packed 12 days, with all the sporting events from last year returning, as well as a few extras. The JBay Winterfest is set to run from the 8 - 19 July.
The JBay Winterfest kicks off early with a precursor event, the JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA. This surfing tournament is a one day contest and has a waiting period from 1 - 12 June. The winner of this contest gets a wildcard slot into the Championship Tour event, the JBay Open.
Along with the surfing contests there are also a number of other sporting events like the JBay Mountain Bike Open, the Core Sokkie Jol skate event and the Infood Blue Cold Water Swim Classic.
This year the trail running has changed somewhat. The JBay X Trail Run is a unique and extreme event comprising 60 km of trail running in 3 races over 2 days, with all races starting exactly 12-hours apart. This exciting new addition will take place over 11 - 12 July, and there will be details to follow.
The Oakley X-Over Challenge is set to return, and is set to have a bigger field and to step up a notch from last year. The Challenge is a 'cross - over' event, featuring surfing, golf and mountain biking disciplines and has a field of famous sportspeople and celebrities. Last year it was won by Butch James from Raynard Tissink, Greg Minnaar and Kevin Evans. Other competitors included Jordy Smith, John Smit, Ryan Sandes and Bob Skinstad to name a few.
The JBay Winterfest Live music festival is also set to return, with some great acts lined up. Matthew Mole will be headlining, and other acts include the inimitable Jack Parow, Taxi Violence and PHFAT amongst others.
Winterfest spokesperson Brenton Williams is upbeat about this year's festival. "This is the third year that the JBay Winterfest is taking place and we will be building on the successful event that was held in 2014 that saw up to 45 000 people in Jeffreys Bay," said Williams.
The highlight of the Winterfest is the JBay Open Of Surfing, event 6 of the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour. Last year the tournament was won by Australian surfer and former world champion Mick Fanning, who defeated fellow Australian Joel Parkinson in the final in excellent 6-8 foot surf. Mick will be returning to defend his title.
A brand new surf event taking place during the JBay Winterfest is the first contest in the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS. This contest will take place at Magnatubes during the JBay Winterfest, is a three-day tournament and has a waiting period from 13 - 17 July.
The JBay Winterfest has Social Media channels that will be relaying the action throughout the 12 days.
