Follow Up Details to Friday's Report on South Island Attack

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 February, 2014 - Darren Mills feared for his life as he was set upon by the deadly predator. The 28-year-old was 50m from shore at Porpoise Bay on New Zealand's South Island, when he felt a "huge knock" on his surfboard. He then looked down to see a shark with its jaws wrapped around both his leg and his board.

Darren managed to fight off what he believes was a Great White by throwing a punch and wriggling his leg free. Despite fighting off the shark, Darren told New Zealand's One News how he still feared for his life.

"When it hit me, it sort of pushed me out and I sort of realised what was going on… and I tried to punch it," he said. As he struggled to get back to the beach, he admitted he "was pretty scared it [the shark] was going to come back".

"There's a puncture wound just below my knee, which might've gone, or has gone through a tendon, and then there's four lacerations up my leg to the top of my thigh."
