Joli wraps up Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2013 with more stellar images
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 April, 2013 : - - Hi from Bells Beach, In another day of upsets, Adriano de Souza became the first Brazilian surfer to win a Bells Bell in the 52 year history of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach after defeating tour rookie, Nat Young, in the 30 minute final. Following Monday’s drama with the number one and two seeds, Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson being eliminated by Brazilians Willian Cardoso and Raoni Monteiro respectively, maybe the writing was on the wall.
After five consecutive days of swell and some amazing surfing by both the women and the men, de Souza and Young were the last men standing. Adriano has done well at Bells in the past and seems to love the long thick walls, he sets up big open face carves by drawing out his bottom turn and then heading for the lip. Solid surf in the 4’ - 8’ range gave him a canvas to work on and he took the opportunity at every chance he got to glide across the face of the waves. Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow were also in the mix today but de Souza and Young powered passed them all.
Nat Young, from Santa Cruz in California figured the waves and conditions were just like home and he showed how comfortable he was with long right handers and the cold water by making his maiden final after just two contests in his Rookie Year.
Occy, who was at Bells Beach as part of the webcast team and the last goofy-footer to win a Bells Bell in 1999, shared a joke with de Souza after the final; Occy thanked Adriano for keeping his record intact by defeating Young, who was the only goofy-footer left in the event after Round Five.
Monday saw Tyler Wright and Carissa Moore battle it out for the Women's Bell. Wright has made all three finals this year while Moore had won last weeks Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River, Western Australia. She backed it up again with another strong win, ringing the Bell’s bell for the first time. With a short season for the women it’s already shaping up as a battle between the pair for this year’s World Title.
This year’s Rip Curl Pro was blessed with a great swell with lots of waves and incredible surfing went down. Two surfers got to ring the Bell for the very first time. Adriano rang it so hard he actually broke the bell off. Rip Curl’s slogan for this year was ‘You Gotta Win It To Ring It’... not ‘shake it to break it’ or ‘ring it to ding it’ as were some of the Instagram comments flying around.
I’m playing catch up and loading up images from the past five days to this Gallery so keep checking in over the next few days.
