Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 November, 2013 - Aloha from Hawaii's North Shore. The first jewel in the Vans Triple Crown wrapped up on Sunday with Michel Bourez, A.k.A. The Spartan, taking the contest out for the second time in his career. In 2008 Michel was in the race to qualify for the Top 32 and used his win to launch himself onto the WCT. This year has been his best on tour so far with a runner up finish in Bali and a solid finish in the Trestles event.
Despite the small conditions at Haleiwa for the running of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, Michel threw his big frame around and used all the power he generates from his back foot style to post a 9 point plus ride in every heat he surfed. He'd looked like the surfer to beat from his opening heat and kept the momentum going right through to the final.

He had his fellow finalists in 'combo' land for most of the 35 minutes. Fred Patacchia scored his own 9 point ride with less than 5 minutes to go but nobody was going to deny Bourez his win. The event also featured the Reef Clash of the Legends with Sunny Garcia taking the title for the second year running defeating good friend Kaipo Jaquais, Michael Ho and Brad Gerlach in the best of two rounds.
The second jewel in the Vans Triple Crown, The World Cup of Surfing, got underway this morning in 4'-6' conditions at Sunset Beach. It's been a slow start to the winter season but the swell forecasts are looking much better for the coming days. I'll post images from this Sunset Beach event into it's own Gallery and I'm also loading images to another Gallery named, Hawaii 2013 Surfing & Lifestyle.
