Joliphotos.com captures what you didn't see on the Gold Coast
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 March, 2016 - Photo journalist Peter 'Joli' Wilson used his amazing ability to get behind the scenes and send in this report from the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro events at Snapper. Check out this dazzling round of images from his Snapper gallery.
G'day from the Gold Coast,
It was a very wet finish to the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro's here on the Gold Coast but it didn't dampen the spirits of Matty Wilko and Tyler Wright who made it an Aussie double at Snapper Rocks in the first World Tour event of the year.
Despite the constant rain, the beach at Snapper was packed with a cheering crowd.
Stu Kennedy who had taken out both Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina fell one heat short of a fairy tale finish.
A lot of the crew were hoping for a Wilko - Kennedy final but when that didn't happen the hometown crowd all shifted their alliance to Wilko who was cheered through every wave and there was a massive cheer when he rode his last wave to victory over Kolohe Andino.
Wilko is only the third goofy-footer to win the Quiksilver Pro in its history and there definitely wasn't another surfer that spent more time upside down than he did this week.
Tyler had a pretty tough run to the final having to get past the Queen of Snapper, Steph Gilmore and then defending Champ and current World Champ Carissa Moore in the semi's before taking on Courtney Conlogue in the final.
