Joli's Blog: 'Burleigh 2012'
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 February, 2012 : - - In front of massive crowds at Manly Beach in Sydney, the symbolic home to the birth of Australian surfing almost 100 years ago, Matt Banting, a young Aussie grommet from Port Macquarie, pulled off the unthink-able last weekend by winning both the Junior and the Mens divisions of the Australian Open of Surfing.
World number two Sally Fitzgibbons snagged her own type of double when she defeated Sofia Mulanovich in the final of the Womens division. Sally had won the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach back in August 2011 and now holds the titles of US Open of Surfing Champion and Australian Open of Surfing Champion.
The focus of the surfing world has now moved north to the Gold Coast where the 2012 ASP World Surfing Awards Banquet will take place Thursday night ahead of the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks which kicks off Saturday. The surf forecast looks promising.
