2013 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Images
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 March, 2013 : - - The 2013 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro wrapped up today in solid 8’ plus surf with Hawaiian surfers Dusty Payne taking out the Men’s Prime event and Carissa Moore making it an Aloha double notching up the win in the inaugural women’s World Championship Tour event.
Dusty Payne had been one of a handful of surfers on top of his game from the very first round and had continued to post high heat scores all week. He defeated former winner Josh Kerr in the 30 minute final after knocking out another in form surfer Julian Wilson in the first semi final. Kerr had edged past the last goofy footer standing, Adrian ‘Ace’ Buchan in the second semi to make the final.
This is the last year the event will be a Prime after being awarded WCT status for 2014 and it seemed as though the WCT Top 34 surfers had jumped at the chance to surf some heats out at the main break at Margaret River in preparation for next years contest. All four finalists are current members of the Top 34.
On the women’s side of things, 2013 was their first WCT event here and the level of surfing in the demanding conditions certainly justified the upgrade in status. Carissa Moore showed her Hawaiian heritage in the solid surf while Tyler Wright relished the chance to surf the solid 8’ surf as well, despite copping a few on the head during the 30 minute final. She’d also taken a knock to her thigh on the reef in the semi final against Sally Fitzgibbons which slowed her down a bit.
It’s been a good ten days here with a couple of lay days which gave everyone time to cruise the Margaret River area, taking in the other surf breaks around, the forests, food and lets not forget the great wineries in this area.
