Mathis Crozon hits excellent score range on Day 1 of Junior Pro Sopela

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 July, 2017 - Bizcaya Basque Country - The final stage of the European Junior Qualifying Series, the Junior Pro Sopela got underway in clean two-to-three foot surf at Playa de Arriatera. The extended waiting period allowed contest officials to focus on the men’s competition, calling the women Off for the day.

After a slow start, the tide got high and the sun came out. The action came closer to the shore, to the delight of local crowds. As the ambiance warmed up, the men’s action continued to complete the opening round and the first twelve heats of the second.

One outstanding performance of the day was Youri Conradi’s (FRA), 16, who managed to take advantage of his physical strength to soften the blow on his powerful final maneuvers on both of his best waves.

“Waves are a bit tricky” Conradi said. “It closes pretty fast and you need to generate a lot of speed immediately after take off to manage to put two maneuvers and try to push as much as possible. I got one really good wave where I went straight from the bottom to the top, and then I hit the lip and landed a critical re-entry to finish.”

With a total combination of 14.67 points, Conradi found his way into Round two.

“I’ve competed in three junior events this year and I didn’t get better than the third round. Forecast seems to be on my side for this one, and I like this kind of waves, so I hope that I will improve my results.”

Mathis Crozon (FRA), 17, didn’t want to miss a chance to improve his season average and he showed the judging panel that he was back in great shape, clinching excellent scores on his two best waves and posting the highest wave combination of the day. The Reunion Island surfer posted a 9.43 and 8.87 for a total 18.30 out of a possible 20.

“I missed the Junior Pro Espinho because I had big exams on the next day”, Crozon regretted. “It’s not the best season I’ve had, but I wanted to come back in form. I had two really good rights on my backhand and I felt really good. I surfed one heat after the other and I knew I had to stay focused if I wanted to move ahead in the competition. There’s a long way before the final rounds.”

Adur Amatrian (EUK), 13, made the most of his local knowledge to play with the changing conditions caused by the dropping tide.

“I feel so happy, the waves got really fun. I got a couple of good ones,” Amatrian explained. “Stocked to make it through the next round! At the beginning I started on the inside, and the tide went out so the outside started to break, so we all changed our strategy and waited for the good ones outside. I even managed to start on a left that connected to a right closer to the shore.”

He received a 14.50 total from the judges to qualify for Round 3.

Coming from further East on the Basque coast, he compared his homespot to Sopela’s break: “It’s pretty similar in Zarautz. At low tide it really looks like this so I feel comfortable in these waves.”

Endika Garai (EUK), 17 , surfed two heats today, and showed great confidence in the water. He clinched the second best heat total of the day, a solid 15.17 combination.

“I felt very good today,” he stated. “I’m surfing at home and all the crew is here on the beach, cheering on every wave. It gave me a lot of energy. I train everyday on this spot with the Peña Txuri Surf School and this helps to feel confident in those moments. But I will surf heat after heat and see what tomorrow brings.”

Event officials will reconvene on Thursday at 8 a.m to reassess conditions and launch the remaining heats of Men’s Round 2, followed by Men’s Round 3.
