Oceanside serves up good surf at North Jetty

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2014 - The “Summer Youth Clash,” was held September 3rd and 4th at the North Jetty in Oceanside Harbor in 3 to 4 foot contestable surf. North Jetty is known as one of the most consistent waves on the coast and served up fun waves the whole event. The goal of this event was to bring back the great contests of Oceanside’s past and after the 2 days of competition the kids left stoked and paid.

Along with the $6000 prize purse, good waves and a fun format attracted Juniors from all over the country and a few international competitors.  Along side the event, Nixon hosted it’s Weird Board Expression Session where Chemistry’s Jason Bennett created 8 uniquely shaped boards that 8 randomly selected competitors surfed for a $1,000 winner-take-all prize.

Competitors and spectators the first day saw consistent surf and 2 rounds of competition. All winners of the first round heats received a Nixon tide watch and got one step closer to the man on man heats of Round 4. Day 1 standouts that won both Round 1 and 2 heats were Kei Kobayashi, Ryland Rubens, Brendan Donovan, Derek Gomes, and Kevin Schulz.

Day 2 saw an increase in swell and Round 3 starting at 8:00am. A few of the Day 1 standouts made it thru to the quarters, and with money now in reach, Griffin Colapinto, Nolan Rapoza, Breyden Taylor, and Jordy Collins stepped up their game by pushing into the semis. Between the quarters and semis Nixon ran the Weird Board Expression Session and the 8 randomly chosen competitors surfed 2 heats on 2 different weird boards. Everyone was impressed how well they adapted to channel bottoms, single fins, asymms, etc… The highlight of both expression session heats was Nolan Rapoza blasting a huge air on a 5’4” x 17” wide channel bottomed single fin. Consequently, he was able to take the win and the $1000 cash winner-take-all prize.

The man on man final saw Griffin Colapinto against Nolan Ropoza. It was a closely fought battle the whole heat with Nolan Rapoza looking like he was going to run away with the win. With 5 minutes left in the heat and Griffin with priority, a set wave came his way allowing him to post the highest wave score of the event, a perfect 10.0. That scored helped him secure the win and bragging rights until next year. After the close final and an unfortunate loss, Nolan Rapoza showed great sportsmanship by helping chair Grifin Colapinto up the beach to his title of Summer Youth Clash champ and $3000 dollars in cash.

Thank you to all the sponsors and staff, DJ’s throughout event, and the award-winning Privateer Coal Fire Pizza in Oceanside for catering the event both days.
