Rogue wave sweeps across Kam Highway toppling bystanders
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 January, 2016 - Kelly Slater was on Baywatch, but his character was not that of a lifeguard. He left that to the redsuits. Kelly was Jimmy Slade, pro surfer, diamond smuggler and the subject of a few slow-motion videos. Nonetheless he fell into lifeguard roll on Wednesday on the North Shore.
On Wednesday there was enough swell to sweep across Kam Highway, knocking onlookers into the sea. West Australian photographer Chris Whitey’s wife and son, Van, experienced this carnage first hand. Fortunately, Kelly Slater was on hand to save the mother and child according to Next Impulse Sports.
“So thankful the surf gods denied @kellyslater today cos for whatever reason he was right there to save my wife and kid who were swept across a road by a freak wave today,” said Whitey in a social media post. “Forever grateful to the great man and so thankful my family is alive and safe. Thanks to all the lifeguards too who saved many lives today.”
Kelly responded to Whitey on Instagram pointing out that not finding a place to surf on Wednesday was fortuitous.
“Chris Whitey, thank you!” said Slater. “I didn’t look at it that way but for some random reason I stopped there when I normally don’t and happened to be there. Lifeguards were on it either way and had it handled. So glass all is well and we can (someday) laugh about it. Van’s first wave was a huge one! Definitely a WA baby!”
