Mega Artana takes the under 16 category

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2014 - Kuta, Bali - The second leg of the four part Billabong and Surfer Girl Halfway Grommet Attack series had a massive start with flawless two to three foot glassy surf. Held on 21 July 2014 at Halfway, Kuta, the event was greeted with perfectly peeling right-handers. Grommets from the Push-in Division up to the Under 16s from Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Hawaii and elsewhere had a fun day of friendly competition at Kuta’s best beachbreak.

In the highly competitive Under 16 Boys Division, it was Billabong’s own Mega Artana from Kuta who ended up at the top of the podium after smashing the bag out of every wave he took off on in the final. When asked how he managed to beat last event’s winner Raju Sena and the duo from Brazil in the finals, he re-plied, “The waves were really good today, and I got those long rights, plus I felt like I was surfing good. May-be a little bit lucky too, but this is my homebreak that I surf all the time. I’m so happy for this win, and hope I can do it again on the next event!”

Over in the Under 12 Division, Kian Martin, who just returned from competing in Australia took home the win with a series of solid surfing and exciting maneuvers. “It feels really good to win here today, especially after just getting back from Australia,” said Kian. He adds “There were lots of good long right handers, perfect for me and my style of surfing, so it was fun and I’m stoked to get such a good result”.

Dhea Natasha took her second first place finish in the Under 16 Girls Division. She was up against Sophie Fletcher, Taina Hinckel, and Cinta Hansel in the final, and used her local knowledge to pick off the choice waves and squeeze every point out of them; while the highest single wave score of the day went to young Adrian Steenburgen (also known as Adrian-Yos), who posted a perfect 10 for a super long wave in his Round 2 heat, and then continued his masterful dominance of the Pushing Division to post a whooping 46.6 points and win the final.

A new addition to the beachside activities during the event was the arrival of the crew from the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), who brought 3 cute Bali puppies to the event for the kids to play with.
