Joaquina, Florianapolis Brazil
1 - 7 November 2016

Strong winds have forced event organizers to call the day off

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 November, 2016 - After a marathon day of competition where 24 heats were completed in front of an ecstatic crowd, a heavy cold front from the south marched through Florianopolis bringing with it strong winds and leaving the lineup uncontestable on Thursday. Event organizers declared a lay day with a new call set for 7:30am local time to resume the 2016 WSL QS 6,000 Hang Loose Pro Contest.

"As was expected, the day began with very strong south winds and conditions aren’t up to par so there won’t be any competition today," said Luli Pereira, Head Judge for the World Surf League. "According to the forecast, the wind should ease up throughout the day and we’ll make a new call tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 am. We expect conditions to improve and should finish off the event this weekend."

On hand for the call was Ryan Callinan (AUS), who will be facing up against Heitor Alves (BRA), Tomas Tudela (BRA) and Juninho Urcia (PER).

"I think it was the right decision to call a lay day," said Callinan. It’s not very contestable out there. It’s obviously really windy, but even with the wind the waves aren’t really cooperating. I sat out front for a while and I didn’t really see any link up or anything, so it was a good call.

Callinan is going through a rough season on his rookie year on the WSL Championship Tour and is looking to requalify on the Qualifying Series. Despite his ups-and-downs, the young Australian has kept a positive outlook and has benefited from his experience on the CT.

"It’s been pretty challenging," continued Callinan. "I obviously haven’t made many heats, but it’s been amazing. Just getting the chance to surf with those guys all the time, I feel like I’ve been able to improve myself and be able to go to all those great locations and compete with the best in the world has been great. I’ve been really enjoying it even though I haven’t been doing as well as I’d like."
