April 12 - 24, 2017
The first half of the waiting period eyes several potential swells
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 April, 2017 - The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the third stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), has been called OFF for the day due to decreased swell on offer.
“The swell has dropped considerably from yesterday,” said WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow. “We are calling competition off for the day. After yesterday’s unexpected bump in wave sizes, we were anticipating bigger conditions today, but it has dropped out a lot. The wind is still really light as well, which means there is still a bit of bump from the overnight on-shore wind. We are still looking at a promising forecast over the second half of the Easter weekend, so we will reconvene tomorrow and reassess conditions.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:45 a.m. local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call.
When competition resumes, up first will be defending event winner Matt Wilkinson (AUS) against three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) and Jadson Andre (BRA) in the opening heat of Round 1.
Reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) will battle CT veteran Jeremy Flores (FRA) and former CT ripper Glyndyn Ringrose (AUS). Ringrose, who earned his spot in the event by winning the Visit Victoria Trials, will compete in a CT event for the first time since 2001.
Round 1 Heat 3 will see 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) facing Stuart Kennedy (AUS) and 2017 CT Rookie Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).
Current World No. 2 Owen Wright (AUS) will see Miguel Pupo (BRA) and 2017 CT Rookie Ezekiel Lau (HAW) in Round 1 Heat 2.
Surfline, official forecast for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, are calling for:
SW swell trends down through the day. Light NW wind in the AM, clocking SSW/SW over the late afternoon and building to light/moderate levels.
The first half of the waiting period has several potential swells: medium size SW swell on Wednesday, fades Thursday. Back-to-back SW swells are possible from Friday afternoon through Sun/Mon that, at this point, look roughly similar in size. There is potential for a larger and possibly solid SW/SSW swell for Tue-Thur the 18th-20th.
The event will be broadcast LIVE via WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL app and on Facebook LIVE via the WSL's Facebook page. Also check the local listings for coverage on CBS Sports Network in the U.S., Fox Sports in Australia, ESPN in Brazil, Sky NZ in New Zealand, SFR Sports in France and Portugal and as part of the EDGEsport Network.
