Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2011 : - - Praia do Diabo, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil -- Leila Hurst (HAW) has won the Arnette ASP Womens World Junior presented by Quiksilver, topping Joanne Defay (FRA) at the backup location of Praia Do Diabo after a dominant performance on the final day of competition.
Stop No. 2 of 3 on the ASP World Junior Tour, the inaugural Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver has run at both the lefthander of Arpoador as well as the right of Praia Do Diabo, which lies on the other side of the events primary location.
Hurst was a standout throughout the events entirety and stormed her way through to the Final after earning a 9th place at the ASP World Junior Tour season opener, putting the Hawaiian back in contention for the elite ASP Womens World Junior Crown.
It was my first time in a World Junior Final and it might be my last year, so Im so excited, Hurst said. I feel so blessed to be in Brazil. Everyone has been so nice and Im just really excited. Australia is next, so who knows! Normally I get so stressed out at contests, but I just tried to relax and have fun.
Hurst was equally efficient at both the main event location of Arpoador as well as Praia Do Diabo and was a consistent top-scorer throughout the entirety of Arnette ASP World Junior competition. I feel like both waves were really similar, Hurst said. It was really hard to control your board out there because there is so much backwash coming off of the rock.
Joanne Defay, who finished equal 3rd place in Bali, established herself as a frontrunner for the under-21 crown when she finished runner-up to Hurst today after topping talented Australian Phillipa Anderson in their Semifinals clash with the days highest score of a 9.57. Im pretty happy to have made the final, Defay said. Phillipa was inside and I had the priority. I had the first nice carve and made the re-entry to get through.
Anderson, who finished second at the ASP World Junior in Bali, was on fire in Rio de Janeiro, but was unable to find a rhythm in her Semifinals matchup against Defay and earned an equal 3rd place finish. I was feeling good throughout the entire event and I dont know what happened out there in the Semifinal, Anderson said. I guess thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. There were a couple of bombs out there, but I just didnt find them.
The result establishes Anderson along with Defay as the frontrunners for the ASP Womens World Junior Crown.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at Arpoador at 7am local time for a possible 7:30am start to mens competition. To watch the Arnette ASP World Junior presented by Quiksilver LIVE log on to brasilusopenofsurfing.com
