Dews goes toe-to-toe with Toby Cracknell
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2015 - Queenslander Lincoln Dews has won the Open Men’s Technical Race today at the 2015 Toyota Australian SUP Titles at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast.
Dews and Toby Cracknell (NSW) went toe to toe the entire race with only two or three board lengths between them until the second last marker turn. Cracknell was hit by a wave and knocked off his feet , given Dews a little extra breathing room for the run up the beach to post a time of 31 minutes and 1 second.
Jayden Jensen (QLD) came in third on a day of good hard racing and great sportsmanship across all five divisions.
Former Iron Women champion and surf sports legend Karla Gilbert (QLD) was challenged in the Open Women’s race by Terrene Black (NSW) before the defending champion pulled away to comfortably win in 38 minutes and 24 seconds.
In the Over 40 Women’s race, Tammy Montgomery (NSW) and Melissa Cedelland (NSW) finished first and second. Paul Jones took out the Over 40 Men’s title while Michael Stokes won the over 50’s Men’s race, while James Paul (Qld) won the Open Prone race.
Action continues tomorrow on day three of the 2015 Toyota Australian SUP Titles when technical racing begins at Currumbin on the southern Gold Coast. Nearly 250 competitors will represent their states across three disciplines durfing this week's titles: surfing; technical race between 4-8km of several laps in and out through the surf; and a 20-30km marathon.
Valued Surfing Australia partner Toyota is again naming rights partner to the event, which has attracted nearly 250 of the country’s top SUP exponents.
