Locals dominate on Day 1 of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 December, 2010 : - - Cronulla -- Day one of the now famous Wahu Surfer Groms Comp saw a stellar line up of competitors hit the waves at North Cronulla under steel-grey skies after five events held nationally.

Kicking off the overcast day was the Under 15 boys division with groms frantically battling it out on the super clean 2 foot waves, which saw some top surfing by Joe Wallace (Caringbah) taking out the heat after an interference call drove him  to bring it home with a  6.5 on his last wave.

Not to be overlooked was Brody Blinkhorn (Dolans Bay) who was spurred on by the interference from Wallace to pull him from fourth place to second, with great wave selection in the last 30 seconds of the heat.

In the under 13’s Nathan Martin (Cronulla) was pleased after getting not only the highest wave score (8.83) of the day at his local break, but also the biggest two-wave combined score with a series of successful maneuvers totalling 16.70.

“The Wahu surfer Groms Comp is great, even if you don’t get through in the comp you get to take home loads of fun Wahu prizes” said Nathan, a humble young grom who is keen to nab a sponsor in the future. Standing out despite the challenging conditions, competitors Jacob Hooker (Woonoona) and Kipp Caddy (Lake Tabourie) made the most out of the conditions on offer along with Monty Tait (Maroubra).

Mid morning saw the focus jump from the water to the Wahu fun zone as the competitors took on a number of fun activities taking home a range of great Wahu prizes. Ben Dewhurst (Cronulla) had a great time in and out of the water and thought he was at the Ashes winning the classic catch comp nabbing another great Wahu fun prize.

“Its such a great day, I get to surf all morning and play cricket and I won a sweet Wahu mini footy to take home”.

With the biggest turn out so far by competitors and supporting families, the Cronulla Wahu Surfer Groms Comp lived up to its reputation of providing a fun, competitive environment with a focus on introducing competitors to the structure of a professionally run surfing contest.

Day two is gearing up to a big showcase of finals heats and more Wahu fun beach activities like beach cricket and beach soccer throughout the day. Kicking of with the under15’s at 7:30am the Surfing NSW Event Hotline will be open from 6:45am, call 0458 247 212 for the daily even location
