About the book

At long last, the definitive biography of Tom Blake -- the man who invented the surfboard fin, the hollow board, sailboard and arch-typical surfer lifestyle (amongst many other accomplishments) @ has been published and is available for ordering at:

Produced by Spencer B. Croul and co-authored by Gary Lynch and Malcolm Gault-Williams, TOM BLAKE: The Uncommon Journey of a Pioneer Waterman is the culmination of a 15 year-long project by noted surf historian Gary Lynch.

"He started trusting me more and more and opening up," Gary recalled of Blake before his passing in 1994 at age 92. "And then, between taped interviews and letters and all of the material that we eventually accumulated, it came to be."

Second only to "The Father of Modern Surfing," Duke Kahanamoku, in influence to the sport of surfing, Tom Blake was a tireless innovator, champion swimmer, paddler, surfer, surf photographer and lifestyle leader.

Even so, "He was very modest in his later life," emphasized Gary, Blake´s authorized biographer, "and really was more interested in talking about the fate of humanity in general, and nature especially, and all his observations through life."

Blake´s life is chronicled in detail in TOM BLAKE: The Uncommon Journey of a Pioneer Waterman, a 256 page hardcover edition and special boxed collector´s edition, featuring over 300 images @ many never seen previously @ from the Blake collection.

"I think he had a sense he was making history because of the notations he made on original material that we´ve accumulated, such as ´to the surfriders of the future´ and things like that," Gary underscored. "It was [meant] for people 50 years from now. I don´t think he thought anybody knew what he was doing at the time, that the pack would never catch up with himE[or that] 50 or 75 years [later] they would appreciate it. And that, I think, is what´s happened."

3,000 copies of the First Edition of TOM BLAKE: The Uncommon Journey of a Pioneer Waterman, including 300 specially-boxed collectors editions numbered and signed by the three principals, are now available for ordering. For more information and to order, visit:
