Rusty Board Shop La Jolla takes shop challenge event
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 July, 2014 - San Diego - The second stop of the Revolt Summer Surf Series Pro Am took place over the weekend with challenging (but contestable) 2-4 foot S-SW waves. Patience was the key to advancing on Saturday with long lulls between sets. But with key wave selection, the experienced riders were picking off clean waves all day - more than a few clean tube rides had the crowd on the beach and the pier cheering through out the day.
The groms (12 & under) got it started early in the morning with their high energy and willingness to charge any wave that moves! Jack Stewart took the top spot even with an interference as he dominated the final with surfing that is reserved for kids much older than 12. Jackson Bunch and Luca Aza locked down some respectable scores and rounded out the top three respectively.
Meah Collins was the story in the Women's divisions, as she dominated both the Junior Women's and Open Women's division with the same type of surfing that also made her Dad quite famous. It is impressive to see committed rail work from a 14 year old girl.
Top riders from Brazil including the infamous Neco Padaratz, Willian Cordoza & newcomer Luan Wood joined the competition to challenge the So. Cal competitors.
The RSSS judges had their work cut out for them at this event. Just a few points made the difference in multiple divisions. In the Men's Pro Am, after an all-out battle in the final heat - 1st place went to Luan Wood, while a close 2nd went to Vince Boulanger - 3rd Austin Ware & 4th went to Jeff Lukasik.

Noah Hopper captured his second consecutive 1st place in Junior SUP. Stand Up Paddle divisions have a blast at these events with a real camaraderie between the competitors. The series Finale for the SUP divisions will take place at stop #3 as most SUP competitors plan to attend the Dana Pt. Battle of the Paddle same day as our final event in October.
New to the event was Avasin surfboards. Seasoned shaper Scott Sherwood, teamed up with Seth Stuckert & Pro Surfer Ricky Whitlock to create this new surfboard manufacturing company. A growing roster of Avasin team riders includes the likes of Ricky Whitlock & brand ambassador Austin Ware. Avasin supplied a blank for Jeff Lukasik to create a one off - Most Interesting Man In The World - surfboard art
Also new to the event was WOW Factor Attractions. Giant inflatables that people climb into and ride in the wild surf. Very fun to watch - even more fun to climb inside!
MECCA II Director BJ Johnson was at the event Saturday keeping an eye on some of the top riders featured in the surf film who were competing. The premiere of the film MECCA II takes place July 30 at La Paloma Theater.
Visitors enjoyed the displays on-site provided by Hoven, Dos Equis, Avasin Surfboards, FreeGun, Snow Summit, ZipCar.com and others - all sorts of games, giveaways, samples & equipment demos were there to engage the fans.
The RSSS provided new “wings” to their athletes and select fans at stop #2 by offering the exclusive, limited-edition Red Bull flavor Summer Edition in the Red Bull surfer's lounge. It provides the effect of Red Bull Energy Drink with the new flavor of tropical fruits. The RSSS is the only event in Southern California (and beyond) to sample the new flavor this summer.
Thrusters Lounge in Pacific Beach was the location of the RSSS Official After Party. 94.9 FM Station was onsite from 5 -7pm with van, tent & sound system. Raffling & give away prizes (i.e., concert or event tickets, CD’s, t-shirts, etc.) Street tacos by Taquizas El Unico were served and Live surfboard art by the multi-talented Jeff Lukasik was a hit with the guests. DJ Schoeny killed it with his high energy music. Summary: the RSSS After Party at Thrusters Lounge was packed & everyone had a blast.
