His Excellency Abdulla Yameen attends Maldives Open

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2014 - In a historic moment for Asian surfing, the inaugural ASC sanctioned Maldives Open 2014 surfing and bodyboarding competition’s award presentation on Sunday September 7th was attended by Maldives President His Excellency Abdulla Yameen, together with the Maldives Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb, Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, and several other dignitaries to conclude this exciting 5 day event organized by the Maldives Body Boarding Association and hosted by the Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi Resort.

The awards ceremony began with a speech by ASC General Manager Tim Hain, where he thanked President Yameen and Minister Adeeb first for their support of surfing by ending exclusivity (privatization of surfing points) in the Maldives and for their goal of creating Heritage Surfing Sites on many of the outer atolls of this island nation for all to enjoy, then thanked them for their support and commitment to the Maldives Open 2014 itself.

He then went on to thank the MBBA’s President Abdulla Areef and VP Mohamed Khushurwan for their inspiration and dedication in creating this exciting event with the support of event sponsors Adaraan, Sri Lankan Airlines, Allied Insurance, Kudo Surf, Red Bull, MBC TV M, Print Lab, and Event Maldives.

Before leaving the stage, Hain asked President Yameen to come up on the stage to receive a surfboard personally autographed by Men’s Open winner Garut Widiarta and runner up Hussain Areef and donated by Mr. Matt George.  After receiving the surfboard the President jokingly asked Hain, “Are you going to take me out into the water now so I can try it?”  Hain replied, “Sure, as soon as we get done with these awards!”

The Maldives 2014 saw a total of 56 competitors representing 9 countries competing for a prize purse of $15,000 USD spread over three divisions:  Men’s Open, Women’s, and Bodyboarding. On July 8, 2014 Minister of Tourism Adeeb together with MBBA President Abdulla Areef and ASC General Manager Tim Hain signed a 5 year Memorandum of Understanding in order to assure the goal of growing the sports of surfing and body boarding in the Maldives by having yearly international events, of which this was the first.

After the success of this year’s event, next year promises to be even bigger and better with the goal of bringing in the world top surfing organizations, the Association of Surfing Professionals and the Association of Professional Body Boarders into the event.

The location of this surfing event at Lhohis was picture perfect and logistically excellent, with easy access to the surfing point, plenty of space for spectators, and in a resort that lacked for nothing, as the competitors and crew were very well feed, housed and provided for each step of the way by the management and staff of the Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi Resort, many thanks to COO Mr Upul Peiris, GM Mohamed Asim, and Marketing GM M.U. Lantara for all their help and support to make the event a resounding success.
