Maya Gabeira is a big-wave surfer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although she had only been surfing for three years before she paddled into her first big wave at Waimea, Maya knew she was hooked. She is one of the hardest charging women in the sport and has ridden some of the largest waves in the world, setting the record for the largest wave ridden by a woman (45 feet) at Dungeons, South Africa. Gabeira has won five Billabong XXL awards from 2007-2010, and again in 2012. In October 2013, she nearly drowned after a wipeout at the infamous Nazaré, Portugal.
