Costa Rican Surfing Talent Noe & Leilani Join the Team
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 February, 2014 - Noe Mar McGonagle and his sister Leilani McGonagle from Pavones, plus Jossue Venegas from Dominical will represent CR Surf Travel Company this year in Costa Rica and international surf competitions. All three surfers not only show tremendous talent, but also maintain a deep connection within their community and are leaders in protecting the environment.
Noe Mar McGonagle will not only be competing on Costa Rica’s Circuito National Surf (CNS) Circuit, but also on the Associacion de Latin America Surf tour (ALAS) who run contests from Argentina to Mexico. Noe Mar was very successful in 2013, earning 1st place in the Junior Division of the CNS plus earning the title of ALAS Latin American Junior Champion.
When Noe Mar was asked why he liked surfing in contests, he answered "I enjoy competing in the Circuito because I get to surf against all my friends and team mates in Costa Rica. When we go to the ISA World Games events, we all want to do our best together as a team for Costa Rica." In the community he organized and hosted a Grom fest for the youth in Pavones in late December, getting kids out in the water and teaching them how to improve their wave riding skills.
His sister Leilani McGonagle also had a great 2013, winning the Junior Women’s Title on the Costa Rica tour, plus making the finals in an ASP Pro Junior event in Barbados and a third place finish in the NSSA Open in Oceanside, CA. She also helped organized the Pavones Grom Fest, and has participated in multiple beach cleanups. What is most impressive about her is her kindness in and out of the water, as she makes any stranger feel welcome on the beach, and is best friends with her fellow competitors. "I enjoy competing in the Circuito because I have lots of friends there and I feel surfing with them pushes me to surf better. We are like a big family with all the kids," stated Leilani.
Jossue Venegas is the newest member of the CRsurf Team. He grew up in Dominical and is proud to represent his home town while competing around the country, and hopefully make the international team. When he is not surfing he is a full time lifeguard, protecting tourists and locals from the powerful waves and dangerous rip currents that can frequent Dominical. Jossue also participates in beach cleanups and replanting of mangroves along the Río Barú, the river that majorly affects the sandbars on his home break.
It is not just results that matter. Team riders have to show leadership in protecting their coastlines, and be respectful members of their community. It is integral of the mission of the CR Surf Travel Company, building a surf community that can support surf tourism sustainably. As owner Greg Gordon explains, “By respecting our beaches we are saving waves for future generations of surfers.”
