Merewether Club takes out boardriders battle at Forster

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2013 : - - The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle was greeted by another day of perfect four foot waves when competition resumed today at Booti Booti National Park.

In a fierce battle that came down to the last final of the Teams division, Merewether and Le-Ba Boardriders fought tooth and nail in an attempt to claim the number one spot. However, due to the standout performances of power-surfer Jesse Adam, Merewether were able to clench the victory in the final heat, beating the star-studded Le-Ba team by a mere 370 points.

Surfing across both the Skins and the Teams event, Adam proved to be one of the standout surfers of the entire event taking two straight Skins victories and locking in two 8.37 rides in the Teams final.

“This was the perfect way to end a massive weekend of surfing,” said Adam. “Everyone knows team surfing is one of the most intense forms of competitive surfing, so it definitely feels good to get the win. I really enjoyed the new format and it allowed for some super high performance surfing, we saw five or six clubs who were really intense in the water as they attempted to get the win. We’re just so happy it went our way.”

Merewether Surfboard Club Team Manager Tim Ryan was ecstatic to claim victory over Le-Ba.

“It’s an awesome win for us,” said Ryan. “We came to this event with seven surfers out of action and to get a win is just incredible. There’s a lot of depth in this club and we’re pumped to head off to the National Final at Cronulla next year. We’ve been training over the last few weeks and running through drills and just trying to understand the rules and I definitely think that helped.”

As a result of this event, both Merewether and Le-Ba have booked their spot in the National Final, which will take place in Cronulla on Australia Day next year.
Former World Championship Tour surfer and Saltwater Boardriders Club member Ben Dunn showed he still possessed the skills to excite the spectators and judges, when he went on to claim a perfect ten-point ride in the semi-finals of the Teams division.

The Old Bar surfer seamlessly linked together a series of critical turns to claim the score and book the Saltwater Boardriders Club their spot in the Teams final.

Surfing NSW Head Judge Phil Courtney and the rest of the judging panel were thoroughly impressed by the surfing they saw over the weekend.

“Some of the surfing we saw over the course of the weekend was on the same level as you’d expect from the World Championship Tour,” said Courtney. “We saw several ten point rides and a handful of performances that would’ve cut it with the best surfers in the world.”

The next Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle will take place in Queensland from November 2-3, 2013.

A total of sixteen clubs will qualify for the National Final which runs over the Australia Day weekend at Cronulla. As a sanctioned Association of Surfing Professionals event, Australia's best professional surfers will return to their grassroots to surf for their club in an attempt to claim the $20,000 first place prize from the $105,000 total prize purse.

The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle also includes a Monster Raffle giveaway with one lucky ticket holder to drive away in a new Toyota RAV4. Other prizes include a Billabong pack valued at more than $1500 and a Nikon 1 AW1 camera valued at up to $1000. The Monster Raffle is open to all Surfing Australia affiliated boardrider clubs with proceeds returning to the boardriders club community.

In a further incentive to the clubs that make the National Final, the four junior female surfers from the four highest placed clubs will be invited to be part of the Surfing Australia documentary Wildcard.

Wildcard is a one hour documentary following the four female surfers as they are given the chance of a lifetime to win a wildcard spot into the Open division at the Australian Open of Surfing at Manly in February, 2014. The four will be invited to the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) for a week-long selection camp to see who will win the wildcard.

The Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle is proudly supported by Be the Influence – Tackling Binge Drinking, Billabong, Toyota, Nikon, Surfing Australia, Surfing NSW, Destination NSW, the Association of Suring Professionals, Coastalwatch and Surfing World.
