RSA requests calm respect for MP plaque unveiling
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 January, 2014 -- Recreational Surfing Association (RSA) urges calm and respect for MP Plaque Unveiling and Kirra Big Groyne Civic Celebration for 1st of March, 2014.
Gold Coast City Council’s civic ceremony of the Michael Peterson plaque unveiling and Big Groyne Kirra celebration on 1st of March, 2014 at Big Groyne Kirra, Kirra Point, Marine Parade, Coolangatta, Queensland.
This will be a great day to respect MP, and to celebrate with the Peterson Family as well as the completion of Big Groyne which so many of us have worked so hard towards its reconstruction.
It's a proud day for Michael, his Mother Joan, brother Tommy, sisters Dorothy and Denise and all those friends and supporters who love the King of Kirra revered as one of the all-time iconic and enigmatic cult surfing heroes so adorned by the surfing world.
MP’s surfing at Kirra will be indelibly remembered by his outstanding tube riding and radical maneurves in the 1971 Albe Falzon Morning of the Earth movie carving his trademark cutback made forever famous.
Peterson’s contest record says it all. 1972 & 1974 Australian Champion, 3 times consecutive winner of the Bells Beach Easter Pro 1973 – 1975 (Bells Beach, Victoria), winner of 1974 Surfabout Pro (Sydney), winner of 1975 Pa Bendal (Sunshine Coast), winner of 1976 NZ Pro (Phia) and winner of the 1977 Stubbies Classic (Burleigh Heads). Most of these events heralded in the new era of professional surfing whilst all competing on a single fin surfboard.
Let’s pray that the waves are kegging at Kirra Point on that very special MP Big Groyne Kirra day in the history of the Gold Coast.
This is a day of respect for Michael attended by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and despite any personal indifferences about the Mayor, RSA asks respectively to leave all personal and political thinking directed against the Mayor to be put aside until polling day.
