During Billabong Rio Pro lay day Mick spent the day volunteering
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 May, 2014 - While Mick’s stint in this year’s Billabong Rio Pro may have been short-lived, it certainly wasn’t short in life. Mick stayed busy during his time in Brazil and for all the right reasons. For all the best reasons. On one of his few lay days, Mick sought to do something not for himself but for the community in Rio. He sought to give back and he did just that.
Mick spent the day volunteering with a small Brazilian organization that teaches underprivileged and disabled kids how to surf. The goal is to get these kids hooked on surfing to give them hope, and the results have been tremendous. Most kids can’t kick the surf bug after catching their first wave.
And suddenly, they have something to strive for. They have an escape from the sometimes too cruel reality. They have something to focus on. And what better guy to learn from than a three-time world champ?
