Big scores get locked in day two of Rip Curl Gromsearch
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 January, 2015 - North Narrabeen, Sydney - Semi-finalists were decided today across all divisions in near-perfect three foot waves at the Mick Fanning Rip Curl GromSearch National Final at North Narrabeen.
Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) made his intentions known in the 14-and-under Boys division, successfully posting the first ten-point ride of the event. The North Coast surfer performed a flurry of exciting and powerful backhand snaps to lock in the score. McDonagh then backed up the score with a 9.33 (out of a possible ten points) to claim the highest heat total of the entire event (19.33 out of a possible 20 points). As a result, Mikey booked his position into tomorrow’s semi-final and also claimed the POSCA Wave Of The Day award.
Paris Whittaker (Caringbah, NSW) caused one of the biggest upsets of the event in the 16-and-under Girls, successfully knocking 2014 Under-16 Australian Junior Champion Macy Callaghan (Avoca, NSW) from the event in the quarterfinals. Whittaker linked together a chain of technical backhand snaps and wraps to bypass Callaghan and book her spot into the semi-finals with a healthy heat total of 14.50 (out of a possible 20 points).
Jaleesa Vincent (Coolum Beach, Qld) continued her impressive run through the 16-and-under Girls. The Queensland surfer successfully snagged multiple high-scoring waves in her quarterfinal to post an impressive 17.46 heat total and lock in her position in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
Logan Steinwede (Wagstaffe, NSW) and Beau Buckpitt (Culburra, NSW) were the dominant surfers in the 12-and-under Boys division. Both surfers claimed solid wins in the quarterfinals and cemented their spot into tomorrow’s semi-finals.
Luke Wrice (Bulli, NSW), Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW), Kael Walsh (Yallingup, WA) and Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, Qld) all posted wins in the 16-and-under Boys quarterfinals with heat totals in excess of 13 points. All surfers will face off tomorrow in the semi-finals.
