Burrows, Chapman, & Dews add to Australia's Medals
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 May, 2014 - Coolangatta, Queensland - Travelsim Team Australia has added to its medal haul following the men’s marathon events at the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Nicaragua. The event has attracted more than 250 of the world’s best SUP and paddleboarders from 28 countries. The surfing competition was held at La Boquita and the racing is being held on Lake Nicaragua.
The men’s marathons followed the same 18km route through the islets of Granada in Lake Nicaragua as the women the previous day and were again held in stifling heat and challenging headwind conditions. Rhys Burrows (Sunshine Coast, QLD) engaged in a fierce battle with New Zealand’s Sam Shergold and only a sprint finish at the end separated the two after their 18km slog. Burrows won the gold in 1hr55mins12secs ahead of Shergold (1.55:17) with Newcastle’s Rory Chapman (1.58:01) in third.

The men’s SUP marathon was an equally arduous battle with the Sunshine Coast’s Lincoln Dews and Gosford’s Toby Cracknell part of a breakaway group that led for much of the race. Frenchman Titouan Puyo proved the strongest in the run home taking the gold in 1.49:25, ahead of Dews taking the silver in 1.50:24 and Eric Terrien, also of France, in 1.50:43. Cracknell finished seventh in 1.52:10. Heading into the final day, Travelsim Team Australia leads the event ahead of the USA and Brazil.
