Komunity Project Great Lakes Pro kicks off in February

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 February, 2016 - Sydney - Over 144 professional surfers will call Great Lakes home early next year when the Komunity Project Great Lakes Pro presented by Rockstar lands in Boomerang Beach.

The elite three-day competition – which will form the final of four World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) events on the NSW Pro Surf Series  – will take place from 16 – 18 February, 2016.

Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon said: “Surfing NSW have been fortunate enough to host the NSW Surfmasters Titles in the Great Lakes region over the last five years and we strongly feel the waves are conducive to explosive hi-fi surfing that we’re expecting to see over the course of the entire series. Surfing NSW can’t wait to see all the other talented competitors tear the waves apart when the event kicks off in February.”

Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, said: “The NSW Pro Surf Series is a great regional event, and I can’t wait to see some of Australia’s top surfers come to Boomerang Beach to compete. It will also provide a great boost to our local visitor economy and showcase the beautiful beaches we have here on the Mid-North Coast.”

Komunity Project CEO and Executive Director Paul Munten said: “The Komunity Project Great Lakes Pro presented by Rockstar is the first professional surfing event we’ve sponsored and we feel it’s the perfect platform to showcase our team in some of NSW’s best waves.”

Great Lakes Council's Tourism Coordinator, Ms Sharon Bultitude said: "It's pleasing to see our quality waves - long well known to NSW surfers - are being recognised on the pro surfing circuit. It is expected that the event will bring in well over $220,000 to the local economy.

Some competitors will come earlier and some will make a holiday out if it. This way they get to relax afterwards and hopefully get a chance to also enjoy the wonderful activities and spectacular natural attractions that our region has to offer. We welcome everyone to the Great Lakes and we're looking forward to seeing all the action unfold in the surf."

Surfing NSW will also factor in a range of activities and surf school lessons for local Indigenous surfers over the course of the event window.
