From One Extreme To The Next For the Billabong Grom Series

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 February, 2011 : - - The second event of the Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge scheduled to take place at Whangamata this weekend (5th - 6th February) has been postponed due to lack of swell. The decision to postpone the event comes on the back of stopping the first event midway through for the complete opposite reason - too much swell. The finals of the Under 16 and Under 14 Boys and Girls Divisions for the first event are yet to be contested.

The two extremes for the first two of three events of the series will have New Zealand's grommets frustrated and hanging out to compete and see an event through to completion. Ironically, Whangamata has had four weeks of decent swell so far this year and has only gone flat this week post the Billabong Pro presented by Sony which confronted Cyclone Wilma head on.

"We monitored a small pulse of swell that was expected to fill in overnight Thursday" said Billabong Event Director AJ Matthews. "However this morning there was certainly not enough swell to surf nor was there sufficient swell forecast for us to push the green light on the event and hope for swell to fill in over the next 24 hours."

The second event of the Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge has now been rescheduled to take place on the 19th - 20th February at Whangamata with a hope the swell will return for the classic summer event.

The Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge is now into its sixth year and is entrenched in the development pathways of young New Zealand surfers as they try their hand at competing, many of whom start careers at these very events.

Five division winners from the series win trips to Australia and entry into the Billabong Occy Grom Comp later this year. With the finals of the first event yet to be contested and two events remaining in the next three weeks, it will be a whirlwind rise to the top for five lucky young grommets.

Please see below for the remaining two events that make up the 2011 Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge.
