Fourteen corporate teams raise $40,000 for SurfAid
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 February, 2015 - For a second year in a row, the Newcastle City Council Boardriders have won the SurfAid Cup. Held at Merewether Beach, Newcastle, with 14 corporate teams raising $40,000 for humanitarian organisation SurfAid.
KCE won the SurfAid Cup fundraising trophy. The team of Chris Cashman, Troy Gould, Joe Myson and Paul Van der Velde raised $6,489. The Hunter Business Boardriders have now raised more than $200,000 for SurfAid since they started fundraising with the Surfest corporate breakfast in 2010.
All funds raised contribute to SurfAid’s mother and child programs in remote areas of Indonesia in Nias, Mentawai islands, Sumbawa and Sumba. “The funds raised by the SurfAid Cup in Newcastle, the ongoing support of Surfest, the Hunter Business Boardriders Club and the community of Newcastle saves lives in Indonesia. SurfAid works in places where hardly anyone but surfers go – but where there are high rates of infant and maternal mortality. Days like today show that surfers can make a real difference and give back to the places they love” says Andrew Judge, SurfAid’s CEO.
The surfers were treated to near ideal conditions with light winds and pumping 4 to 5 foot waves. A five-man tag team format, the SurfAid Cup is also part of Surfest and all the teams pick a pro surfer or legend to join their fundraising team.
The judges were impressed with the level of surfing by all the competitors. Toby Martin joined the event in the commentary box and surfed with KCE. Other legend surfers included Tom Whitaker and Michael February.
The incredibly exciting final came down to the final wave, with the Council Boardriders narrowly edging out KCE (57.40) with a final score of 60.17. The Sandbah Surf team, who had been smashing it all day, placed third (53.90) with the Hunter Business Boardriders team rounding out the final in fourth (48.63)
The Newcastle CC Boardriders team members were Dwayne Jefferson, Daniel Masson, Mick Body and Jed Cook, and they selected Jarrod Morrell, Coffs Harbour local legend, as their pro surfer.
The other placings were: Sessions Legal in fifth, Mullane in sixth, Doyle in seventh, followed by Orica, Musical Surfers, Watt Street Arc in tenth, BilbieDan in eleventh place, Lawler in twelfth, followed by Shaw Gidley and EJE.
