The Leveller is a collaboration in Cornwall between local schools and surf scene
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 October, 2014 - Nixon, in association with iAM Bands, The YHA and Sennen Surfing Centre in Penzance - Cornwall - were proud to unite earlier this month for the inaugural edition of The Leveller.
The brainchild of former WQS surfer Sam Lamiroy, The Leveller, is a new and innovative collaboration between local schools and colleges and the grassroots surf scene. The result? A unique surf competition that took place at Sennen Cove, preceded by coaching from top instructors and pro surfers alike, and a top-to-bottom beach clean up.
With locally sourced food and plenty of Nixon product to keep the kids satisfied and entertained when they weren’t in the water, The Leveller truly delivered on its promise by uniting surfers of all abilities, ages and genders in one contest format. All up against the same conditions in the line-up, as well as the same demanding judging criteria - but with a unique handicap scoring system - the surfers battled it out and were eventually split by just a few points. In the end, everyone left with a few tips to improve their surfing, new friends, good memories and some sick prizes - including a custom shaped "Cord" surfboard and matching Nixon Supertide watch for the overall winner.
Sam Lamiroy: “While this new format won’t be making an appearance at elite level, it definitely has the potential to revolutionize competition at grassroots level – it’s inclusive, fair and – judging by their smiles and laughter – so much fun for all the competitors.”
“It’s super-important for a brand like Nixon to be involved at every level of the culture we live and breathe,” said Franck Corbery, EMEA Marketing Director at Nixon. “That’s why we jumped at the chance to get behind The Leveller – it’s original events like this that have the potential to inject new life and talent into our world.”
